Unit 1 Geographical Skills and Challenges •

This unit has two sections, both of which are compulsory material: *Unit code 5GA1F/5GA1H •
Section A – Geographical Skills This covers cartographic skills, graphical skills, and geographical enquiry, and ICT and GIS skills. Overview of assessment 25% of the total GCSE •
Section B – Challenges for the Planet This covers issues that have arisen from climate change and sustainable development. • This unit is assessed through a 1-hour, tiered, written examination with a total of 54 marks.
There are 25 marks in Section A and 29 marks in Section B.
The examination will contain a mixture of question styles. •
Of the 54 raw marks available, up to 4 marks are awarded for Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG).

Unit 1 Dynamic Planet •Externally assessed • Availability: June series Overview of content *Unit code 5GB1F/5GB1H This unit has three sections. Section A is compulsory, and Sections B and C contain optional topics.
• Section A – Introduction to the Dynamic Planet Compulsory topics: Restless Earth, Changing Climate, Battle for the Biosphere and Water World. 25% of the total GCSE
• Section B – Small-scale Dynamic Planet Optional topics: complete one of either Coastal Change and Conflict or River Processes and Pressures.
• Section C – Large-scale Dynamic Planet Optional topics: complete one of either Oceans on the Edge or Extreme Environments.
Overview of assessment • This unit is assessed through a 1-hour 15-minute, tiered, written examination, which contains a mixture of question styles. 78 marks are available, with 48 marks in Section A, 15 marks in Section B and 15 marks in Section C. • Of the 78 raw marks available, up to 6 marks are awarded for Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG).
